Innovation in BIM Excellence

Our nomination for the BIM Excellence Award recognises the delivery of a modular treatment plant using advanced filtration and UV disinfection to meet National Drinking Water Regulations. The project showcased Coffey’s commitment to digital innovation, guided by ISO 19650 standards to ensure precision, collaboration, and sustainability.

Key technologies employed include:

  • Dynamo for automated design workflows
  • InfraWorks for comprehensive site visualisation
  • 3D point cloud scanning for accurate pre-construction and as-built verification

The project’s prefabrication approach, supported by BIM-generated cut lists, led to reduced material waste and shortened construction timelines. A Common Data Environment (CDE) centralised collaboration, minimising errors and boosting efficiency.

By adhering to COBie standards, we ensured comprehensive asset information for streamlined operation and maintenance. Compared to traditional methods, the project achieved a 35% reduction in delivery time and a 27% cost savings, while also significantly lowering the carbon footprint. This project exemplifies our dedication to sustainability, cutting-edge digital workflows, and delivering measurable value to our clients and end-users.

Excellence in Civil Engineering: Terryland Raw Water Intake Project

The Terryland Raw Water Intake Project is a transformative infrastructure development that safeguards water sustainability for Galway City. Situated on the east bank of the River Corrib, this €14 million project replaced an 1860s intake that faced abstraction challenges, delivering a modern facility with a 55 MLD capacity, expandable to 90 MLD.

The project demonstrates construction excellence through innovative approaches, including Ireland’s first concrete jacking pipe tunnel under the N6 Motorway, achieving a 20% cost saving. Environmental leadership was exemplified by implementing state-of-the-art fish protection systems and significantly reducing carbon emissions through the use of GGBS concrete mix designs.

Our team’s proactive approach to risk management and stakeholder engagement facilitated the successful delivery of complex works adjacent to Europe’s fastest-flowing city river. Collaborative workshops and technological integration, including BIM implementation, enabled the project to exceed original specifications while upholding environmental stewardship. The result is a sustainable, resilient asset that sets new standards for infrastructure development in Ireland.

Leadership in Construction Project Management: Declan Murphy

Declan Murphy’s journey to Construction Project Management began with a strong passion for civil engineering and tackling complex challenges. His experience spans significant mega-projects in Australia, including the Gateway WA Perth Airport and Freight Access Link, where he developed comprehensive expertise in managing large teams, strict deadlines, and intricate logistics.

One of his key achievements at Coffey has been leading the Terryland Raw Water Intake Project in Galway. Through consistent open communication and thorough stakeholder engagement, Declan successfully delivered this crucial project safely, punctually, and under budget. By utilising innovations like BIM and Lean Construction, he enhanced design quality and reduced environmental impact.

Declan’s leadership approach also prioritises continuous improvement and mentoring colleagues. He actively shares valuable insights from challenging projects like Terryland, where the team successfully managed cofferdam construction in the River Corrib and tunnelling beneath the N6 motorway. Declan remains dedicated to fostering excellence in construction and confidently delivering projects that benefit both clients and communities.

Looking Ahead

We are incredibly proud of our teams for reaching this stage, and we know they will represent Coffey with professionalism and pride.

The winners will be announced at the ICE Awards Gala on 1 May 2025 at the Convention Centre Dublin, where we’ll be celebrating alongside our peers in the construction industry. We look forward to the event and to sharing the outcome with you!

A huge thank you to our clients, partners, and colleagues who continue to support and contribute to our success. Congratulations to all the other finalists – we look forward to celebrating together!
