Coffey is working on the Duleek to Navan Trunk Watermain project on behalf of Uisce Éireann. This important project involves upgrading the water infrastructure within the Navan – Mid Meath Water Resource Zone (WRZ), serving a population of over 40,000 people. This is one of a number of strategically important projects underway to increase the security and resilience of drinking water supply across County Meath.
Figure 1: Duleek to Navan Trunk Watermain Pipeline Route
The Duleek to Navan Trunk Watermain is in line with Uisce Éireann’s strategic plans to improve resilience in the network and reduce the number of isolated water resource zones where large populations are vulnerable to interruption to supply.
The project includes several connected parts that will create a strong water distribution network. The work is being carried out on public roads between Duleek and Navan (with about 16km of new water pipes being installed), including the L1610 from Boolies Little (south of Duleek) to the N2 at Balrath, the R153 from Balrath to Kentstown, and the R153 from Kentstown to Casey’s Cross, Navan.
A key part of the project are the underground crossings of the River Boyne and the main Navan to Drogheda railway line. Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) will be used to install 361m of 630mm diameter pipe under the River Boyne and pipe-ramming will create a 40-meter long, 1200mm diameter tunnel under the railway track. These methods will allow for construction to proceed without the need for open-cut excavation, making the project faster and less disruptive.
Other parts of the project include:
• Duleek to Carn Hill Pipeline: A proposed 600mm diameter water pipe will transport water from the L1610 road at Boolies Little to the Carn Hill Reservoir, east of Navan. This section will also include a flow meter and chamber for efficient water flow monitoring.
• Brownstown Booster Pumping Station: Located in Brownstown, this 6.9MLD pumping station will boost water pressure along the pipeline to ensure efficient distribution.
• Carn Hill Reservoir Secondary Disinfection: Upgrades to the chlorination system will ensure the water supply meets Uisce Éireann’s standards.
• Pipeline from Carn Hill to N51: A new 500mm diameter water pipe will connect multiple reservoirs and networks to improve water distribution.
• L1610 Distribution Main: A new 180mm internal diameter pipe will replace an old 150mm pipe between Deenes and the N2 National Road, improving the system’s efficiency.
• Existing Main on Slane Road: A pressure-reducing valve (PRV) and filter will be added to improve control and stability of the water network.
Once completed, the Duleek to Navan Trunk Watermain Project will provide the following benefits:
• Maintain drinking water supply to Navan in case of planned or unplanned issues at Navan’s Liscarton Water Treatment Plant.
• Support the future growth of the area, including new housing developments, as Navan has experienced rapid expansion.
Coffey is dedicated to delivering the Duleek to Navan Trunk Watermain project to the highest quality while minimising any inconvenience to the community and the environment. We are proud to be part of this important project and to work with Uisce Éireann to provide a sustainable and reliable water supply for Navan and the surrounding areas.
