Coffey Completes Terryland Water Treatment Plant Intake Works Project in Galway

Coffey has successfully delivered the Terryland Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Intake Works Project in Galway City. This important project, commissioned by Uisce Éireann and Galway City Council, enhances Galway’s water infrastructure.

Project Overview

The project involved constructing a new raw water intake on the River Corrib at Terryland. This facility enables efficient extraction of raw water for processing at the Galway Water Treatment Plant, improving the water supply for Galway City and surrounding areas.

Key features include:

• Increasing daily capacity from 38 megalitres per day (MLD) to 55 MLD
• Design allowing potential expansion to 90 MLD to meet future demand

Work commenced in August 2022, with the completed project handed over to Uisce Éireann in April 2024.

Engineering Achievements:

The project demonstrated Coffey’s engineering capabilities through several notable achievements:•

• Relocation of the raw water intake 100m downstream of the Quincentenary Bridge

• Installation of a 1,200mm ‘transfer main’ pipeline beneath the N6 Quincentenary Bridge and Terryland
River using trenchless technology

• Implementation of an advanced fish deterrent and return system

Challenges Addressed:

Our team successfully managed numerous challenges throughout the project:

• Working near critical infrastructure

• Executing deep excavations for pipework installation

• Integration with the existing live water network

• Construction of a watertight cofferdam in a fast-flowing river

• Trenchless crossing of the N6

• Treatment of ground water

Benefits for Galway:

This project provides two primary benefits to Galway and its residents:

• A more consistent, high-quality drinking water supply

• Increased capacity to support future population growth

At Coffey, we are committed to developing sustainable water infrastructure that contributes to the long-term well-being of the communities we serve. The Terryland WTP Intake Works Project reflects this commitment, helping to ensure Galway is well-prepared to meet its future water needs.

We thank Uisce Éireann, Galway City Council, and all project partners for their collaboration in delivering this vital infrastructure. As we complete this project, we look forward to continuing our work in providing effective solutions to water infrastructure challenges across Ireland.
