Coffey built the first wind farm in Ireland, in 1992, at Bellacorick in County Mayo, with works including erection of turbines, construction of access roads, sub-station and cabling and duct routes. The largest turbines constructed to-date are at Coomatallin, Co. Cork. Project encompassed the design and construction of six 1 MW wind turbines, together with sub-station, cabling and extensive permanent access roads. Coomatallin wind farm can power around 4,000 homes and helps abate almost 5,000 tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide per annum.
Coffey has undertaken extensive underground cabling work for electricity supply companies as specific projects and as work incorporated into other infrastructure projects. For example, the Bishop O’Donnell Road Widening project incorporated approximately 3km of new 10kv, 38kv and 110kv ducting/cabling and diversion of a further 2km of 110kV. It is our preference to directly employ our site personnel, and we have used our multi-skilled resources to excavate and reinstate trenches, lay ducts and lay cables. We employ specialists to undertake cable jointing and splicing work when required.
Coffey has constructed sub-stations for the public distribution network and for supplies to development sites. Our in-house electrical engineers have designed LV substations and Programmable Logic Controller panels for many of our infrastructure projects, including wastewater treatment plants and for technology park infrastructure.

The substation serviced the largest offshore wind farm in the world at the time. Works included topsoil strip, construction of complex foundations for numerous structures, including the G.I.S. Building, North & South 220kV Shunt Reactors, North & South 400kV Shunt Reactors, North & South Transformers & the North & South DRC Transformers, main site platform construction, ducting, drainage, access roads & a box concrete culvert.
